An English Pilgrimage: Springtime in the North of England

(May 3 – 14, 2007)

Day 1, Thursday, May 3: Fly out of San Francisco

Day 2, Friday, May 4: Arrive at Heathrow, coach to meet us and drive to Cambridge. Night in Cambridge.

Day 3, Saturday, May 5: Explore Cambridge colleges in the morning, punting on the River Cam in the afternoon - with hired "punters" managing the poles! Choral Evensong at King's College Chapel at 5:30 p.m. Night in Cambridge.

Day 4, Sunday, May 6: Morning service at 9:30 at Great St. Mary's, the University Church, which is across the street from King's College. Coach trip to Norwich for lunch and afternoon visit to St. Julian's Church and the attached reconstructed "cell" - now a chapel - where 14th century Lady Julian of Norwich lived. 3:30 p.m. Choral Evensong at Norwich Cathedral. Night in Cambridge.

Day 5, Monday, May 7: Coach to Little Gidding to visit chapel used by Nicholas Ferrar and his 17th century lay community, and Olney, where John Newton, author of the hymn "Amazing Grace" had his first parish and where he is buried in the churchyard. Possible Choral Evensong at another Cambridge College. Night in Cambridge.

Day 6, Tuesday, May 8: Coach to York via Lincoln. Lunch in Lincoln and tour Lincoln Cathedral. Night in York.

Day 7, Wednesday, May 9: Guided tour of York Minster, walking exploration of York - the Shambles, City Wall, etc. Choral Evensong at York Minster at 5:30 p.m. Night in York.

Day 8, Thursday, May 10: Morning coach to Whitby on North Sea to visit ruins of Whitby Abbey. Lunch in Whitby. Afternoon train ride on North Yorkshire Moors Railway - a preserved steam railway (featured in the PBS TV production of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited). Board train at village of Pickering (on the direct route back to York from Whitby). Night in York.

Day 9, Friday, May 11: Coach day trip to Durham, guided tour of Durham Cathedral. Lunch in Durham. Night in York.

Day 10, Saturday, May 12: Coach day trip to ruins of Fountains Abbey via a stop in market town of Thirsk - where the real life James Herriot practiced veterinary medicine to see his surgery and visit St. Mary's Church, known as the "Cathedral of the Dales" for its size and example of English Perpendicular Gothic architecture and where Herriot and wife Helen were wed. Night in York.

Day 11, Sunday, May 13: Morning service at 10 a.m. at York Minster, then coach to London hotel, via a stop at the Sherwood Forest Visitor's Centre in the village of Edwinstowe with nearby St. Mary's Church - where legend says Robin Hood and Maid Marian were married. Night in London, probably near Kensington Palace.

Day 12, Monday, May 14: Fly home to San Francisco.
